Obituary

Ellen Marie Cavilla, 60 of Mays Landing NJ passed away peacefully on June 15,2020 after a brief but aggressive battle with colon cancer.

Ellen was born to Joseph & Rita Cavilla in the Bronx, NY where they lived for 10 years. The family made their way to New Jersey and Ellen attended St. Nicholas School in Egg Harbor City. She enjoyed playing basketball and spending time with her family as a child.

Ellen went on to study Cosmetology at Atlantic County Vo-Tech and graduated from Oakcrest High School in 1977, where she was also awarded for her artistic achievements. Following high school she began a very successful career in hairdressing. A trade she would later pass onto her daughter. Ellen settled down in Mays Landing as a single mother and embarked in a career within the casinos. She worked tirelessly during her life. She was certified as a dealer in all casino games and spent 30 years perfecting her skill. She went on to become a supervisor and eventually a gaming instructor in Connecticut.

To know Ellen was to love her, she had a larger than life personality and could fill you up with enthusiasm from a single laugh! She had a heart of gold and enjoyed the simpler things in life. Music, dancing, the beach, camping or out on the water and especially her grandchildren. Walking the trails at Estell Manor Park was her peaceful place where she could truly relax and really enjoy God’s beauty. She also enjoyed cooking and shopping, especially for her family. She was an active member at St. Vincent's Church and will be terribly missed by her family and loved ones.

She is predeceased by her mother, Rita Cavilla.
Left to cherish the memory of her life is her daughter, Christine Hoag (Pete), grandchildren Andrew, Chase, Julianna & Isabella, father, Joseph Cavilla and brother Joseph T. Cavilla, her nephew Thomas Cavilla and many aunts, uncles & cousins.

A celebration of her life will be held at Boakes Funeral Home from 2-3pm (friends) and 3-4pm (family) on June 23,2020. Due to Covid-19 restrictions please be mindful to the times of allowed visitations.

In lieu of flowers, monetary donations can be made in Ellen’s honor to the food pantry at St. Vincent de Paul Church 5021 Harding Hwy Mays Landing NJ 08330

When I posted my Mom's obituary on social media it was amazing to see the memories that people had shared of her. Friends of hers and friends of mine all said how her eyes lit up a room, that she was the cool mom, the fun friend you could always count on and so down to earth -- and she was. She was all of those things and more.
My childhood friend Danielle said “ I can still hear your Mom screaming our names off of your balcony if we were late coming inside, telling us she’d whip both of our butts in a New York second if we did it again.” That was so her, she never did it though… she was all bark, no bite.
She fed all of my neighborhood friends and they all called her “Mom”-- sometimes I think she liked them more than me! She was the kind of Mom you could turn to for advice, and I was happy to share her. I mean, I thought she was absolutely crazy half the time, but I think that comes with the territory of a single parent, only child home.
We weathered many storms together, she never gave up-- no matter what life threw at her, she was a survivor, and she raised me to be just as strong. One winter our heater had broken, and there we were wrapped in blankets..the oven opened for heat, just dancing around our living room listening to Mariah Carey's Christmas album singing sooo loudly! Laughing so hard we were crying and then just laughing-- both of our noses and ears were filled with black soot from the kerosine heater my uncle had let us borrow. But that was her way, just dancing through life with the music blasting. She was one of a kind.
It's no secret that our relationship had its ups and downs. It's hard to believe that a falling out between two people can turn days into months and months into years right before your eyes. So quickly the distant relationship that you've created starts to feel more and more like normal- but it does. I am eternally thankful to God for the last weeks that I shared with her. Although the circumstances were severe, it brought us together. I couldn't imagine not being able to hold her hand and tell her I loved her. She lived her life on her terms right up to the end. May you rest easily now Mom, I love you.

The Power of Love

Power of love is a curious thing
It makes one man weep and another man sing
Change a hawk to a little white dove
More than a feeling that's the power of love

It's tougher than diamonds and rich like cream
Stronger and harder than a bad girl's dream
Make a bad one good, make a wrong one right
Power of love that keeps you home at night

You don't need money, don't take fame
Don't need no credit card to ride this train
It's strong and it's sudden and it's cruel sometimes
But it might just save your life
That's the power of love
That's the power of love

The first time you feel it, it might make you sad
Next time you feel it, it might make you mad
But you'll be glad, oh, when you've found
The power that makes the world go 'round

Don't need money, don't take fame
Don't need no credit card to ride this train
It's strong and it's sudden and it's cruel sometimes
But it might just save your life

They say that all in love is fair
Oh, yeah, but you don't care
But you know what to do
When it gets a hold of you
And with a little help from above
You feel the power of love
Feel the power of love, yeah

It don't need money, it don't take fame
Don't need no credit card to ride this train
It's tougher than diamonds and it's stronger than steel
And you won't feel nothin' 'till, until you feel
You feel the power of love
- Huey Lewis

This was the song! I might have been all of 3 years old, I remember driving with her in her silver hatchback Honda singing it! She couldn't believe I knew the words too!

We were friends along time! Through thick and thin. Maybe 8th grade or Freshman year her and Mary Hamilton ran away from home. But anyway ....... Lots of fun in crazy times. Good music! Good friends! We all changed the world back then. Simple times. Gonna miss her.

My heart is broken. Ellen has been in and out of my life since she was 12yrs old. She was like a Sister to me. Between Ellen and Debbie Risley we all had great times together and many lessons learned ! From playing basketball to sneaking out and hanging at the “Shay” in the days when Disco was just beginning. We conquered the 70’s in more ways than one! What a great hair stylist she was / SHAG and BIG HAIR ! Ellen was the best. Our paths became the same in 1994 . We were always together for a long long time until once again life took a turn down a different path. Our hearts were always together no matter which way we we going in life. I was hoping for her path to change in my direction just one more time but it never did. I will forever miss my friend. She taught me so much. I love you Ellen Cavilla. Until we meet again. Always in my heart.
