Obituary

Joanna M. Hawn (Simpson) left us to be with the Lord on Thursday, April 16, 2020. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend.

Joanna, the “baby of the family”, was born on June 29, 1954 to Charles and Margaret Simpson (Beck) in Philadelphia, PA. She was the youngest of five children. She later moved to South Jersey where she attended Overbrook Regional High School. She met her husband, Joseph, and married him at the age of 16. She and Joe had three children, whom she loved with all her heart.

During her lifetime, she worked as an administrative assistant for several local South Jersey businesses where she forged numerous, lifelong friendships. In her personal time, Joanna enjoyed crocheting beautiful items for friends and family. She loved making people smile with her handmade gifts. She also loved dancing, never missing an opportunity to do the Mummers Strut with her siblings. When she wasn’t spending time with friends and family, you could probably find Joanna at the beach. She loved the sand in her toes, the sound of the waves crashing, and sampling various boardwalk treats. She loved all things beachy, especially her collection of lighthouses.

Joanna had a strong and lasting faith in God. She could always find joy and comfort with her church family. She loved them dearly and they always held a special place in her heart. Perhaps the most important thing in Joanna’s life was her family. She had an unconditional love for her husband, Joe, which endured all of life’s trials and tribulations. She had a very close bond with her children, Joe and Michele. Her daughter was truly her best friend. She also adored her four amazing grandchildren whom she was beyond proud of and loved deeply.

Joanna will always be remembered for her warm and open personality. She was a people person, who was quick to make friends wherever she went. Joanna was a caring, loving and compassionate person who loved with her whole heart. She had a beautiful smile and infectious laugh. She would go above, beyond, and do anything for anyone if it meant making them happy. She had a heart of gold.

Joanna was predeceased by her parents, Charles and Margaret Simpson; her sisters, Elizabeth “Betsy” Guazzaloca and Barbara “Bunny” Rutledge; and her daughter, Elizabeth Hawn. She is survived by her devoted husband of 49 years, Joseph Hawn Sr; her loving children, Joseph Hawn Jr. (Andrea) and Michele Gallagher (Brian); her cherished grandchildren Joseph Hawn III, Jacquelyn Hawn, Aubrey Hawn, and Justin Gallagher; her dear brothers Thomas Simpson (Edie) and Charles Simpson (Diane); and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. She is also survived by her special four-legged friends, Theo and Betty.

A memorial service and celebration of Joanna’s life will be scheduled at a later date.
