Melquiades Nicolas Cruz
August 16, 1952-February 2, 2020
Eddie, age 67, passed away on February 2, 2020. He was born on August 16, 1952 in Sorsogon, Philippines to Maria Camino Nicolas and Marcial Cruz. At the tender age of 20, Eddie lost his mother. After his mother’s passing, his four aunts, Titang, Tonya, Ming, and Alegria took Eddie and his brothers into their home. His four aunts loved them dearly and supported them well. While he was growing up, he became quite skilled in basketball, tennis, and chess, competing in tournaments.
While in college in 1978, Eddie coincidentally bumped into Grace while waiting for the jeepney. He got her phone number and began courting her. It was love at first sight. He later graduated college at the University of the East in Manila with a degree in business. In the 1980s, Eddie moved to America while pursuing his future wife, Grace Cruz, over the phone. His romantic pursuit was eventually a success. Grace and Eddie got married on December 21, 1985. In 1991, Grace joined Eddie in the United States and moved into their first home in Philadelphia, PA. Later on, he and Grace moved into their second home in Mays Landing, NJ and raised three loving and successful children, Michelle, Ed, and Gabbie.
Eddie touched the hearts of everyone he knew with his smile, charisma, generosity, resourcefulness, hard-work, helpfulness, selflessness, and unconditional love. He was an easy man to love. His smile and his laugh could light up a room. You could spot him in the crowd at every special event, game, and musical that his children were in because nothing was more important to him than being there for his family. His children loved him for that. As for his relatives, friends, and coworkers in Atlantic City, he never thought twice about lending a helping hand. He brought joy to everyone around him in so many ways.
His memory will live on through his beautiful wife, loving children, siblings and half siblings, cousins, nieces, nephews, friends, and coworkers. To two of Eddie’s brothers, Odie and Zaldy, he was the “best, big brother.” To his coworkers from the casinos in Atlantic City, he was their “leader” and a central part of their family. Eddie was a great husband, father, brother, uncle, friend, and leader and will truly be missed.
