Pope John XXIII said, “Do not walk through time without leaving worthy evidence of your passage.” Mom certainly heard that.

Although Mom lived her entire life here in this small township she was part of its fabric. Long before this beautiful, new church was ever conceived and built, Mom was among the ladies of the Altar and Rosary Society polishing the statues and pews of the old, humble church on Cape May Avenue to prepare it for Christmas Midnight Mass. She would sell tickets and refreshments at the annual parish carnival that used to be held on the grounds behind the town’s VFW building. Often, she would work the polls on election days in the old American Legion hall on Second Street. And Mom celebrated with the best of them during the town’s 250th commemorative festival in 1960.

Mom also faced many hardships in life but she was a very strong woman. Through her example, she showed us how to accept many of life’s adversities; how to forgive, how to pick ourselves up, how to give up all hope of a better past, and how to move on.

Family meant everything to Mom and she relished holidays and family gatherings. We all know that larger than life smile Mom had when too many people came to the house and we’d move parties downstairs where there was more room.

Through her example, Mom taught us so much. Her quiet, playful charm had a positive influence on all of us. Though she might sometimes have had a few justifiable, stubborn moments, she always taught us to be polite, compassionate and helpful through everything she did. She was the consummate hostess and the backbone of our family and household. Dad often teased that he thought he was going to be marrying a gold miner’s daughter, not a coal miner’s daughter. But he found gold in Mom. He knew it and he loved her for it.

Mom was much more than a Soccer Mom to my brothers and me. Mom was an altar boy, baseball, bowling, Boy Scout, Cub Scout, cross country, track, wrestling and “Mom, can-you-pleeease-type-this-History-report-for-tomorrow-morning?” kind of Mom. Our smoky camping gear and sweaty athletic clothes were always clean so we could go back and do battle again the next day.

And once we left for college, Mom always shipped us off with a can of cookies and a duffle bag of clean laundry.

In retirement, Mom spent little time in a rocking chair. Full-steam ahead, Mom and Dad traveled throughout these United States and into the far reaches of Western Canada. With Dad, Mom also returned to active civic duty with a few Senior Citizens groups. And she cherished every moment she could with her growing grandchildren.

Mom fulfilled many roles in life as she walked through time, and she did leave worthy evidence of her passage; from the roles of daughter, wife, mother and god-mother, to cousin, friend, neighbor, co-worker and many more. But to me, Mom was the quintessential teacher. So, in honor of Mom and in recognition of her as a teacher to all of us, I’d like to give you all - homework.

Over the next three days, do something significant. The only guideline I give you is to think of Lucy. You will know what to do when the moment is right. And then, pause for a moment and tell her, “Thank you.”

Safe travels, Mom.
