Joseph H  Galli
Joseph H, Galli - 83 of Mays Landing, NJ, passed away on Sunday December 30, 2018 while at home in the care of his loving family after a long battle with leukemia. Born on Oct. 9, 1935 in Atlantic City, NJ to Harry and Anna Galli, Joe grew up in Pleasantville, NJ where he graduated from Pleasantville High School in 1954.

In 1955 Joe entered the US Army where he served our nation until 1967, the first two years as a Paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Div and the remaining years as an E-5 MP in the 82nd Leg Airborne Military Police Corps. In March of 1958, Joe was assigned as bodyguard to Elvis Presley as Elvis processed out of the Army from Fort Dix Army Post at Joint Base McGuire. Joe won 2nd place in the 1966 mid-heavyweight All 1st Army Weight Lifting Championship. In 1967, Joe won 1st to become the All 1st Army weightlifting champion, with a clean & jerk of 390 lbs., a military press of 295 lbs., and the snatch of 270 lbs. for a combined total of 955 lbs.

After his military service, Joe served as a Pemberton Twsp., NJ Police Officer for a period of 8 years. Other occupations include, NJ Motor Vehicle Inspector, Brigantine Shell Station Mngt., and most recently as driver at Brigantine Cab. Joe was best known by the community of Brigantine Island, where he resided for 38 years until 2016.

Joe accepted Christ as his personal Savior at the Brigantine Bible Church on Father’s Day 2016. After moving to Mays Landing, he attended the Mays Landing Baptist Church. His trust in Christ assures us that he is at home with the Lord, alive and well.

Joe is predeceased by his parents, Harry and Anna Galli, his brother Victor and sister Frances, and grandson Victor (VJ) Galli.

Joe is survived by his beloved wife of 40 years, Trudy Galli, who he loved more than life. Six sons, Joseph Galli (Maryann), Victor Galli (Maureen), and Michael Galli of Phoenixville/Pottstown area of PA, Jim Nyilas (Blanca), Robert Nyilas, and Edward Nyilas (Tracy), and daughter, Dawn Smith (Chris), of Atlantic County, NJ. Grandchildren, Joseph, Christopher, Jason, Shannon, Jacqueline, Christopher, Jacqulyn, Raymond, Grace, Hailey, Tristin, and multiple great-grandchildren.

Joe’s hobbies were weight lifting, watching football, and playing the horses with his best friend Charlie. He also loved vegetable gardening with his wife Trudy.

A viewing will be held at Mays Landing Baptist Church, 6192 Harding Hwy. (Rt. 40) in Mays Landing, NJ 08330 from 10:00-11:00 am on Saturday Jan. 5, 2019 followed by a service at 11:00. At 12:00 pm, Joe will be transported to the Atlantic County Veterans Cemetery in Estell Manor aboard a military caisson, where he will be laid to rest with full military honors.
