Obituary for Edward R. "Ed" Hitzel

Edward R. "Ed"  Hitzel
Edward R Hitzel, - on June 29, 2015. Born in Atlantic City on January 17, 1951, he was a resident of Mays Landing.

Ed graduated from La Salle College in Philadelphia in 1973 with a bachelor’s degree in English and Education. He began working at South Jersey Publishing Company, owner of The Press of Atlantic City, in June 1969. He worked there until 1994, rising from reporter to an assistant managing editor and eventually becoming Manager of New Ventures.

He started up two and managed three newspaper operations, including The Current and At the Shore. He worked from June 1994 until January 1995 as a manager under former County Executive Richard Squires.

From January 1995 until the present, he was manager of Ed Hitzel Enterprises. He was editor and publisher of Ed Hitzel’s Restaurant Newsletter, a monthly publication, and Ed Hitzel’s Restaurant magazine, which was published four times a year. He also hosted the weekly radio show, Table for One, on News Talk 1400 WOND, that was simulcast in a few other states, including 610 WTEL in Philadelphia. He also hosted a weekly segment on food on channel 40 before its recent shutdown.

Ed was a long-time fan of the Philadelphia Phillies and Eagles and was once an avid skier who loved the mountains of Vermont. He had a beautiful singing voice and was a self-taught pianist, and adored jazz music.

Beloved husband of Susan (nee Herbert). Loving father of Natalie and Nicholas. He is also survived by his brothers Jack and Joseph Hitzel.

A viewing will be held on Monday, July 6, from 5-8 PM at St. Vincent de Paul Church, 5021 Harding Highway, Mays Landing.
Burial will be private.
