Marjorie "Peggy" Newkirk
Marjorie Alice Newkirk, aka Peggy, of Egg Harbor Twp., passed on November 19th after a short illness. Celebrating her 85th birthday on October 27th she dined with family and friends and was in good spirits. She is survived by her son, Dr. Mark D. Newkirk, daughter in laws’ Susan Newkirk of New York, Susan K, Newkirk of Mays Landing, and Carole Weidman of Linwood, grandchildren Matthew Newkirk, Michael Newkirk, Thomas Newkirk, Clayton Newkirk and Tory Newkirk. Also, grand-daughter in law Abigail Newkirk and two great grandchildren, Dalhia and Scarlett Newkirk. She is pre-deceased by her son Thomas A. Newkirk and a sister, Doris Sullivan.
Peggy was an active athlete at Atlantic City High School, graduating in 1950, with her favorite sport (surprise) being gymnastics! The Ventnor Roller Rink was her favorite pastime, and she competed with and belonged to the Roller Derby, back when Roller Derby was all about synchronized skating, dance routines and costumes. Steel Pier in its’ heyday was also a favorite place.
Mom loved her church Zion Methodist of EHT and her Eastern Star affiliations, both of Keystone Chapter 69 and Ocean City Chapter 83. She joined Eastern Star in 1957, and was elected to many officer positions over the years. She was Grand Representative to South Dakota and traveled to that state to participate in services. She also served as Worthy Matron of Ocean City Chapter.
As her two sons were growing up, Peggy was a creative and fun Den Mother to Mark in Cub Scout Pack 38 in Northfield, and to Tom in Pack 98 in Egg Harbor Twp. She loved Halloween and family and friends will remember the costume parties she held every year. No matter how good your disguise was, she almost always would guess who you were!
She was a devout and proud member of Zion United Methodist Church since she moved to Bargaintown in EHT, in 1964, and has many dear friends from the congregation. She was active in Martha’s circle and in the live nativity scene every year until her health waned.
Services will be held at Zion United Methodist Church, 652 Zion Road, Egg Harbor Twp., NJ on Saturday, December 9, 2017 at 4pm. Services will be followed by a celebration of her life reception, at the church hall next door. In lieu of flowers, she asked that donations be made in her name, to Zion United Methodist Church in support of it’s many Christian charities and missions.
